Pikes Peak Poet Laureate 2010-2012 Application Directions and Guidelines

GENERAL DIRECTIONS FOR AN APPLICATION:

1. Cover Page: Include your name, full-time address, telephone numbers, and e-mail address.

2. Résumé: Include a list of your publications, selected performances/readings, your work experience, various awards, your experience with poetry in this and other communities, and any other information relevant to the position.

3. Sample poems: Please include five poems (published or unpublished), not to exceed 10 pages.

4. Describe your two-year vision for the position of Pikes Peak Poet Laureate: The Poet Laureate is expected to a) participate in a limited number of specific community events, such as workshops, readings, public ceremonies, etc., and b) help design and complete a major community-wide project that both inspires and celebrates poetry and connects our community to poetry and poets. Please describe (in under 1,000 words) what you would like to accomplish in your two-year term as Pikes Peak Poet Laureate, with particular emphasis on your ideas for a major project.

5. References: Provide a list of names and contact information of three people we may contact with regard to your work.

6. Deadline for submission: All applications must be received by March 10, 2010.

7. Interview: Finalists will be contacted by the selection committee for an interview. Please indicate any time in March 2010 when you would not be available for an interview.

GUIDELINES FOR SELECTION OF THE PIKES PEAK POET LAUREATE:

  1. Applicants will serve a two-year term from April 2010 and ending in April 2012.
  2. Applicants should be experienced, published poets with a recognized body of work.
  3. Applicants must be willing to appear at and support between six and 10 events per year and also provide support for a major community-wide poetry project.
  4. Applicants must be comfortable making public presentations and working to assist in celebrating and inspiring poetry in our community.
  5. Applicants must reside in or work full-time in El Paso or Teller counties.

Poetry While You Wait

Call for Poetry Submissions by the Pikes Peak Poet Laureate Project (Feb 2010)

DETAILS: The Pikes Peak Poet Laureate Project is now accepting poems for its Poetry While You Wait activity.  Selected poems will be published in April 2010 in booklets and on placards and distributed free to businesses and other places where people wait for services, such as dentists' and doctors’ offices, auto repair shops, beauty salons, barber shops, hospitals, bus stops, Laundromats, etc., in Colorado Springs and throughout the Pikes Peak region, to provide the surprises and delights of poetry.  Selected poems may also be disseminated through various print and electronic media to inspire and celebrate poetry in the Pikes Peak region.

ELIGIBILITY: Poets of all ages, diverse talents, and backgrounds from El Paso and Teller counties are encouraged to send us their original poems that are suitable for the general public.

GUIDELINES: Send up to five original poems, of any genre, each no more than 30 lines long.  Previously published poems are eligible. Include a brief, one or two line biographical note.  If you are less than 18 years of age include your age. Any genre is acceptable but we are most interested in poems that reflect the concerns and/or experiences of people living in the Pikes Peak region.

SUBMISSION DEADLINE:   February 15, 2010

SUBMISSION FORMAT: Type your poems in 12-point Times New Roman or Courier typeface, with your name, address, phone, and e-mail in the top right corner of the page and the poem.  No more than one poem per page.

SUBMISSION METHOD:
E-mail: Send your poems in the body of an e-mail to poet@pikespeakpoetlaureate.org  (do not use attachments).

RIGHTS:  The Poet Laureate Project shall have the right to publish the poems in print (including a copyrighted booklet distributed in the Pikes Peak Region), electronic, and other media for the purposes of inspiring and celebrating poetry in the Pikes Peak region. However, the poets shall retain all other rights to their work.

PAYMENT: Selected poets will receive 2 copies of the Poetry While You Wait booklet.

JUDGES:  The Pikes Peak Poet Laureate Aaron Anstett will be the judge for final selection of all submissions.

 

Athenaea Poetry Competition

Competition open to all students grades 9-12 in the Colorado Springs region.
Postmark Deadline: March 1, 2010
First place: $100
Second: $50
Third: $25

All three winning poems will be published in the spring edition of the Athenaea.
All three poets will be invited to read their poems at a ceremony in April 2010.
Judge: Aaron Anstett, Pikes Peak Poet Laureate, 2008-2010.

Each poem must include the student’s name, address, phone, and e-mail.
Each student may submit up to three poems, each on a separate page.
If e-mailed, paste directly into body.  No attachments.
The Athenaea will have one-time publishing rights only.
Poems must be original and previously unpublished.
Font: Times New Roman or equivalent, size 12
Poems will not be returned.
